Szczawnica is a mountain health resort situated in a quiet valley of the Grajcarek Stream, right bank creek of the Dunajec River. The town is surrounded by Pieniny National Park, Slovak National Park and Popradzki Landscape Park. The name of the town derives from present in this area groundwaters, called by the local higlanders – szczawas (highly carbonated natural mineral water). Szczawnica became famous due to the Dunajec River Gorge rafting which remains the main summer attraction of the Pieniny. On account of unique microclimate and omnipresence of mineral groundwaters, Szczawnica has over two-hundred-year Spa healing tradition.
As a tourist resort, Szczawnica is great excursion base to the Beskid Sądecki, Gorce and Pieniny (mountain ranges). In the winter, through the presence of the numerous ski lifts, Szczawnica becomes a kingdom of winter sports.
